Enemies of Their People

While conversing with a friend, he tells me that his friend told him, “You are speaking with an enemy of the Revolution.” My friend confessed to me that he really does not know who the true enemy is, if it is I, or those who label me that way.

Labels such as these — counterrevolutionary, worm, salaried employee of the empire — and others, are used contemptuously about anyone who expresses a view contrary to the Cuban government. A regime that has been in power for more than 56 years without rule of law and with only one party controls everything!

Since 1959, the so-called Revolutionary government took power and began fomenting hatred against anyone who was not in favor of it. This divisiveness took over everyone, even affecting families in which some members were not sympathizers of the regime.

Thus did hatred grow, and the rejection of other Cubans who criticize the government and its followers. These Cubans have the right to differing thoughts and opinions, without having their patriotism called into question. Citizens throughout the world, even if they think differently, have the same right.

I see how mistreated are people on the Island who oppose the regime. We have as an example the beatings inflicted on the Ladies in White, and other opposition members, who have their own opinions and express them with courage.

Individuals like them, who demand the reestablishment of true democracy in Cuba — despite the abuse and indifference they endure from many other Cubans — wage an open struggle.

There needs to be a true evaluation of who are the so-called enemies.

Those who join with the government and defend its continuation in power do not consider the miserable salaries and poor living conditions of the great majority of the population.

Despite the propaganda machine claiming that education and health care are “free,” we pay a high cost for them.

Those who call us enemies should stop and think: Who, really, are the enemies?

This email is sent to you to denounce a repressive action by a Red Cross member in Cuba during the Papal visit to Santiago. Previous to the Papal Mass, a man who yelled "Down with Communism" was brutally beaten with a stretcher carried by a Red Cross member. The video of the incident was captured by a Colombian journalist who was present at the scene. This is an unacceptable act of brutality that should be condemned, and the Red Cross should take action against this attacker, who is obviously an agent of the Castro regime. He not only committed a brutal injustice against freedom of expression and human rights, but also gave the Red Cross a terrible image. I am sure that this will not be the only email condemning this act of repression.

Cuban citizens all over the world feel outraged that the International Committee of the Red Cross (ICRC) has not yet denounced publicly the attack that took place yesterday in Santiago de Cuba, Cuba, prior to the mass that Pope Benedict XVI was to give in a public plaza of the above mentioned Cuban city.

The attack was carried out—filmed and photographed by the international media: http://noticias.univision.com/edicion-nocturna/videos/video/2012-03-27/hombre-que-grito-en-cuba, http://youtu.be/cmD6BsHRAWM, Reuters, etc.—by a person wearing a Red Cross vest and carrying what appears to be a medical stretcher, and it was inflicted upon an unarmed Cuban citizen who simply protested that there are no civil liberties in his country, which the subsequent detention itself proves. After the protester was detained by police forces dressed in civilian clothes, abundant throughout the plaza, the “questionable” Red Cross worker attacked the detainee—who was visibly restrained and incapacitated to defend himself—, hitting him on the head with the stretcher after pushing him.

The Cuban community feels that the ICRC owes the world an urgent explanation as to why a person wearing its iconic Red Cross of good will and human concern for others, would act in such a violent way against someone that was only exercising his freedom of expression, which we are fully aware the Cuban government violates and does not respect, but the International Committee of the Red Cross (ICRC) should indeed not only respect, but defend as the “neutral organization ensuring humanitarian protection and assistance for victims of war and armed violence” that it is.

¿Está el gobierno castro comunista detrás de los escandalosos fraudes al Medicare en el Sur de la Florida?

Hay una rara relación de concurrencia entre los fraudes desproporcionados al Medicare (y tal vez al Medicaid) que se producen en el sur de la Florida de forma más notable que en el resto del país, y los protagonistas de estos robos. Concurren personas de origen cubano, hay que decirlo, de dudosa dedicación al negocio como proveedores de servicios de salud, que roban a dos manos y después se establecen en Cuba sin que exista la menor intención del régimen comunista de indagar por estos sujetos de conducta inapropiada, para decirlo de alguna forma.

Un nota reciente aparecida en el Nuevo Herald sobre la condena de un ex militar cubano de alta graduación (militar claro) que es condenado por fraude al Medicare pone el asunto en perspectiva. La información titulada: “Dan tres años por fraude al Medicare a ex militar cubano” produjo una reacción en el sitio de Nuevo Acción donde se afirma: “¡y todavía hay quien dice que los estafadores al Medicare no trabajan para la tiranía castrista!”.

El mejor análisis sobre el tema lo proporciona la investigadora asociada de Instituto de Estudios cubano y Cubanoamericanos de la Universidad de Miami, Vanessa López, quien en un excelente articulo aborda el asunto. El Gobierno de Cuba y los múltiples millones de dólares en fraude al Medicare en el Sur de la Florida. Dice la autora:

El estado ruinoso de la economía cubana ha dejado el gobierno de Cuba luchando por la manera de obtener divisas. Cuba ha ideado la forma de beneficiarse dando en arriendo a los médicos, enfermeras, maestros y agentes de seguridad en el extranjero, más recientemente, Cuba también ha encontrado la manera de sacar provecho del fraude en gran escala al Medicare, posiblemente cometiendo guerra económica a los Estados Unidos.

Parece claro que el Gobierno cubano es parcialmente responsable por el número desproporcionadamente elevado de casos de fraude al Medicare en la región. Su asistencia a este delito grave y costoso que no puede pasarse por alto, y su constante complicidad con los criminales de EE.UU., sólo por su beneficio económico, es ofensivo para los ciudadanos de EE.UU. respetuosos de la ley que en última instancia, deben pagar por los miles de millones de dólares en el fraude que se deriva de la asistencia prestada por el Gobierno de Castro.

Teniendo en cuenta que ‘al menos la mitad de los fugitivos de Medicare del Sur de la Florida se cree que están [escondidos] en Cuba,’ es probable que las conexiones cubanas en la región pueden estar jugando un papel significativo en la propensión desproporcionadamente alta para cometer fraude al Medicare.”

Aún queda mucho por saber sobre este turbio asunto donde sin duda en alguna medida está implicada la dictadura Castro comunista. En tanto sería bueno preguntarles a los funcionarios cubanos. ¿Por qué acogen a estos estafadores en Cuba? ¿Por qué no dan informes sobre el dinero que desviaron hacia Cuba u otros países? ¿Por qué, en tanto que son buscados por delincuentes no son devueltos a los Estados Unidos para ser juzgados?
